Sassy Sounds Bites and Profound Lessons Learned at the Playground for Conscious Business

Last weekend,  I attended a gathering in San Francisco at the invitation of Master of Enrollment Coach Bill Baren.  Twenty-nine  remarkable, conscious business owners and industry leaders gathered together to explore what it means to run a conscious business.    My colleague and Action Plan Marketing founder Robert Middleton shared his observations about the weekend in this very thoughtful blog post.  It’s well worth your time, especially if going deeper than the bottom line is where your bliss resides.  Morgana Rae also shared her observations at this link.

My hat is off to Bill Baren and his business partner Patrick Dominguez for their brilliance in creating a rich environment for all of us to connect and collaborate on a very deep level.

Being someone who loves the power of words, I was struck by a few of the sassy sound bites that were shared by many of the guests.

John Dulworth shared an elevator pitch that resonated in a big way with me.  He said, “I am a coach and trainer who guides kick ass women up to big shit.”

Keith Hanna, a coach who works with rock star entrepreneurs to create great lives and great businesses, contributed to a provocative discussion about the selling process.  He offered this quote that seems well worth repeating:  “A browser is a buyer in denial.”

Brian Whetten is someone with a bio that stands out and shines and someone with personal magnetism that lights up a room in a big way.   I thank him for supportive gazes and encouraging words he shared with me throughout the weekend — especially when the time came for drumming and dancing.  He helped me to step out of my comfort zone and step into my own light.

The authenticity theme was alive and in discussion throughout the three-day event, and I loved this comment that emerged organically.  “Love me, Like me, or leave me.”  The big idea here was to step into who we really are so we can do our work in the world with the right people.

Patrick Combs, founder of Life Path Unlimited, is on a mission to guide people on their own hero’s journey toward bliss and to live in the center of what we were all born to do.  He said asked everyone in the room to consider this:  “Does my dream want me more than I want it myself?”  He challenged each of us to consider that serving our bliss is more than enough along our paths to meet with true and real prosperity.

Jeffrey Van Dyk describes himself as “a doula for the doulas of the Earth.”  His mission as the leader of Spiritual Marketing Quest  is to guide people to identify their life purpose, give them permission to illuminate their genius, and build a platform upon which to stand to make their difference in the world. Jeffrey’s brilliant observations contributed mightily to the conversations throughout the weekend.  Among the most profound idea he shared that struck me right between the eyes was this one.  He said, “It is often our deepest wounds in life that give us the reason to create ultimate healing through our businesses.”

The truth is, I’ve struggled with being worthy and heard for most of my life.   That is why giving others their door to greater awareness of their gifts through my work is  my own hero’s journey to bliss.    This is the work I was born to do, and out of my deepest pain comes my greatest contribution.  This I know for sure.

My cup runneth over with gratitude for the gifts this weekend gave me in ways that are too numerous and too priceless to count.  My heart is full and my arms are wide open to welcome whatever may be coming next.

Interesting Video Viewership Case Study – Content is King

I read all the latest information about what works to build a tribe of fans and followers.  And then I jump in and see what magic I can manifest both for my tribe and for my own business.  That’s why I thought you might find it of interest what I have observed with my own very recent YouTube experiment.

One year ago, my first Bye-Bye Boring Bio YouTube video went live and  invited 1000 views in one year.

My NEW ABCs of Bio Blunders YouTube video went live two weeks ago and has already invited 773 viewers.

The first video is more of a sales message.  The second version is very much a content message intended to help people help themselves with useful information to guide their bio writing success. Clearly, the second version is resonating far more than the first.

Are sales coming in? Absolutely!

What people are telling me is that they are enjoying the video, getting inspired by it, and making it a priority to call me to set up their Extreme Bio Makeover appointments and buy their own copy of Bye-Bye Boring Bio.

It’s wonderful when people well beyond your own backyard can come to know, like and trust you by watching less than 10 minutes of video.  And it’s certainly interesting to compare and contrast the two approaches — sales versus content — and experience which approach works best.

Ebook or Real Book? Our Survey Said …And Seth Godin Offers a Compelling Point of View in Perfect Timing

Last week, I sent an e-blast to the customers within the Authentic Visibility tribe and asked them one question.  Given the choice between buying an e-book or a traditional book, what do they prefer and why.  I also posed this question at my business Fan pages on Facebook.

Within 24 hours, I heard back from 100 people who were happy to share their opinions.   Here is how the numbers have played out so far from the first 100 respondents:

  • 51% prefer traditional books to ebooks.
  • 34% prefer e-books to traditional books, especailly if the e-books are shorter than 50 pages.
  • 15% want the choice of either format.
  • About 10% expressed interest in purchasing books in a format that is compatible with a Kindle, Nook, or IPad.

Here are the most common reasons for the e-book preference:

  • International customers enjoy the immediate gratification of paying and receiving their product immediately. They also appreciate saving money and hassles associated with international shipping.
  • Others in the e-book camp said they consider an e-book an environmentally friendly choice that allows them to print only those pages they want and save the rest to their hard drives.
  • When an e-book is longer than 50 pages, however, they are more likely to buy the printed version.  Several respondents say it is too much of an inconvenience to print the pages, punch holes, and bind the content in a notebook.

Here are the most common reasons shared for the traditional book preference:

  • Many of the respondents to my impromptu survey describe themselves as old-fashioned. They love holding a book in their hands, turning the pages to favorite sections, and writing in the margins.
  • Readers  enjoy the the convenience of being able to tuck a book into a purse or briefcase to read while traveling on an airplane or ferry boat or set that book on the night side table for reading before falling off to sleep.
  • Lovers of real books said that when they buy e-books, they often file them away without digging into them, whereas when they buy a traditional book, they are more likely to dig in and start reading right away.
  • Many respondents who prefer traditional books also mentioned how they enjoy sharing their books with others.

If you have a book in your future, consider this “back of the cocktail napkin” research good food for thought to help you decide how to proceed with your next project.  And, you might check these numbers against what is really happening in YOUR shopping cart.  For example, over the last year, 85% of buyers for the first edition of Bye-Bye Boring Bio (a 52-page workbook) have selected the e-book as opposed to the spiral bound printed workbook.

Now that the second edition (to debut 9-8-10)  is approaching over 150 pages of articles, 10 Bye-Bye Boring Bio worksheets that make it easier than ever to prepare a rock star bio for the right situation, and abundant examples to inspire readers to tell their own best stories, I wonder how that will influence format preferences.   After all, what people say they prefer and what they actually do are not always the same thing.

I think I’ll tip my hat to my many years working in the quick service restaurant industry and find a way for my community members to get what they want in the format they love best.  As my friend, colleague, and mentor Alice Cunningham — co-owner of award-winning Olympic Hot Tub Company —  always says, “Make it easy to buy, easy to own, and easy to refer.”

Authentic Visibility Follow Up Question about Pricing:

  • What factor does price play in your decision to buy either an e-book or a traditional book?
  • Do you expect to pay more for an e-book because your treasure the immediate gratification of getting what you want now and you love that environmentally friendly choice?
  • Do you expect to pay more for a physical product because it has more staying power on your bookshelves and more gifting power as you share your favorites with others?
  • Or do you want either choice to carry the same price?

Dot Girl First Period Kit New Product News and Tips Land on CNBC.com and Beyond

Oh the thrill of seeing news about a worthy product travel far and wide and in perfect timing.   I love that.

This morning, news about the Dot Girl First Period Kit landed on CNBC.com and quite a few other news outlets, just in time to serve last-minute back-to-school shopping needs for young girls who may soon be experiencing their first periods unexpectedly at school.

Here’s the lead paragraph, which I had a lot of fun writing:

I can’t wait to learn what happens with respect to new website visits, inquiries and sales of the new product, and additional media pick up about this timely news.
